The important factor that contributes to the establishment of trust and values with in order to provide stakeholders with academic research and its results is the scientific quality of research. PhD thesis, carried out by students and requiring a lot of time and money, constitute a considerable percentage of the research conducted at universities. The present study aims to identify the challenges of  <br /> “the quality of PhD thesis” in Iran from the viewpoint of professors and students, as two major components in doing research in doctoral programs. This is a phenomenological research study, and the data collected through interviews with professors and students in doctoral programs is analyzed on the concept of “value chain”. The findings of the study indicate that the challenge of the quality of PhD thesis involves a multiple, multilayered interconnection of elements (students, professors, managers and policy-makers), organizational structure, procedures, rules and other environmental actors. In addition, a powerful and fast-moving current has developed between these layers, which is both affecting them and affected by them. There are instances of un-academic behaviors that have marred the scientific identity of universities and turned into a major challenge to the quality of doctoral thesis in Iran. یکی از اهداف اصلی پژوهش‌های دانشگاهی، پاسخ به نیازهای علمی جامعه است. در وهلۀ نخست، آنچه موجب اعتماد و ایجاد ارزش به‌منظور بهره‌مندی از این پژوهش‌ها توسط ذی‌نفعان می‌شود، کیفیت علمی آنهاست. درصد قابل توجهی از پژوهش‌های انجام‌شده در دانشگاه‌ها، رساله‌های دورة دکتری هستند که با صرف زمان و بودجۀ قابل توجه توسط دانشجویان این دوره انجام می‌شوند. پژوهش کیفی حاضر با هدف کشف و شناسایی چالش‌های «کیفیت علمی رساله‌های دورۀ دکتری» در دانشگاه های ایران براساس دیدگاه و تجربیات استاد و دانشجو، به‌عنوان دو مؤلفۀ اصلی در انجام پژوهش‌های دورۀ دکتری با استفاده از روش پدیدارشناسی انجام شده است. داده ها از طریق مصاحبۀ جمع‌آوری و براساس مفهوم نظری «زنجیرۀ ارزش» مورد تحلیل قرار گرفته است. یافته‌های این پژوهش نشان می‌دهد چالش کیفیت در رساله‌های دکتری، دارای ابعاد چندگانه و چندلایۀ در هم‌ پیچیده‌ای از عوامل (دانشجو، استاد، مدیران و سیاست‌گذاران)، ساختار سازمانی، رویه‌ها، قوانین و عوامل محیطی دیگر است. افزون بر این، جریان قدرتمند و شتابان دیگری، همزمان در لابه‌لای این لایه‌ها شکل گرفته که هم متأثر از آنها و هم تأثیرگذار بر آنهاست. مواردی از رفتارهای غیردانشگاهی که ضمن خدشه‌دار کردن هویت علمی دانشگاه‌ها تبدیل به چالشی عمده برای کیفیت رساله‌های دکتری در ایران شده است.  http://www.jicr.ir/article_311_9dfcd5e558dfa04aaf37f137a1d9d3e5.pdf
