چکیده

بازتاب تحولات اجتماعی در زبان، یکی از مباحث مورد توجه زبان شناسان اجتماعی، جامعه شناسان زبان و انسان‌شناسان زبان است. نوشتار حاضر، به بررسی پی‌آمدهای زبانی دو تحول بزرگ در دهه های اخیر، یعنی شکل‌گیری اتحادیه اروپا و فروپاشی اتحاد شوروی می پردازد. این بررسی نشان می دهد که این تحولات و پی‌آمدهای زبانی آنها به طور کلی در دو جهت متفاوت یعنی هم‌گرایی و واگرایی سیر می‌کند. فروپاشی شوروی، واگرایی وتکثر زبانی، ارتقاء جایگاه زبان‌های بومی و ملی در جمهوری‌های تازه استقلال یافته، کاهش قدرت، اعتبار و نفوذ زبان روسی در این کشورها را در پی داشت. شکل‌گیری اتحادیه اروپا، به نوعی هم‌گرایی زبانی، یعنی ارتقا جایگاه برخی زبان‌های دارای پشتوانه قدرت و گسترش حوزه کاربردی آن‌ها، و نیز تنزل جایگاه برخی زبان‌های کوچک‌تر و اقلیت منتهی می‌شود. در این بررسی هم چنین نشان می‌دهد که دو تحول مورد بررسی، در دو جهت متفاوت (هم گرایی و واگرایی) حرکت می کنند، اما به نظر می‌رسد دست‌کم یک پی‌آمد زبانی مشترک نیز دارند و آن ارتقا منزلت، جایگاه و اعتبار زبان انگلیسی و گسترش قلمرو کاربردی آن است.
